For many years following World War II, Frannie Weiland ‘45 was probably McCook’s most visible citizen, as he worked in downtown McCook. He was a familiar sight as he pulled his little red wagon, filled with window washing equipment, along Norris Avenue.

It is interesting how events and trends in history tend to repeat themselves from time to time. After the present Red Willow County Courthouse was built in 1926, McCook’s city offices shared facilities with the county, in the county courthouse. But as more and more services were added to both the city’s and county’s responsibilities, more space was needed by both organizations.

A few years ago I made a memory trip to McCook. Mid afternoon as I was driving past the McCook Auditorium I did a double take. Quickly, as if a magnet grabbed me I hung a U-turn and parked my Acura in front of the building. As I bounded out of the car I said to no one in particular, Hey, this is a remarkable building!!

Three major projects that benefit the athletes and fans at MHS have recently been finished due to the generous donations of many alumni and businesses. With the encouragement of activities director, Rick Haney 80, these volunteers have given freely of their time, their expertise, and their money to improve the facilities of McCook schools.

Don Schaaf (’55), after graduating from McCook High School, moved to Chicago where he attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and later worked in advertising agencies there. He was an Executive Art Director, producing and directing various national TV commercials.

For a community of only 8,000, McCook continues to prosper culturally with something to enjoy on a regular basis. The past six months was no exception. I (Randy) returned to my home town only two years ago, and I continue to marvel at the talent on display by productions of the Buffalo Commons Story Telling Festival, the Hot Summer Nights concert series, the Southwest Nebraska Community Theater Association, and the Missoula Childrens Theatre.
