East Ward and the modular classrooms at North Ward are now empty as all elementary students, teachers, and staff officially relocated to new classrooms and offices at McCook’s remodeled and expanded single-site elementary school. The new school will be known as the McCook Elementary School with 383 students, 38 teachers and 22 staff members.

McCook seventh grader Amberette Burkey knows that McCook has a house designed by the world-famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright. And she knows that Nebraska’s senator, Ben Nelson, grew up in McCook and that Nelson’s boyhood home sits between the Frank Lloyd Wright house and her own home on Norris Avenue.

My name is Lewis (Gene) Abbott ‘69. I would like to tell you about a recent experience I had. I am one of many Vietnam Veterans from McCook, and I recently went to Washington, DC and visited the Vietnam Wall on Veterans Day. I was so moved I wanted to tell you about my experience.

After a long pause, designed, I’m sure, to make us all wonder about any evil that may actually lurk there, the voice continued. “The SHADOW knows,” it said, and then it laughed a laugh that clabbered milk . . . .”ha, ha, ha, haaaaaaa.”
