The second half of the 05-06 school year was a busy one at MHS. As usual, sports took a top precedence with several competitors going to state competitions. Sophomore Sam Frazier captured third place at the Class B-4 district wrestling tournament to be a state qualifier. Alyssa Cook took first place at the GNAC swim meet in the diving portion and was a state qualifier. Matt Hall also qualified for state diving at that event and broke the school record for 11 dives with a mark of 330.00. This beat the previous record held by Rick Filon ‘03 by almost 10 points.

Matt Eldred ‘92wife Laura and family live in Longmont, CO. They moved to Colorado in July of 2000 to work with Mountain States Childrens Home (MSCH), a home for at-risk and abandoned youth.

McCook teachers Candy Stevens Fellers ‘67 and Rose Kalinski Sitzman 60 were honored last May at a retirement party held by the McCook Education Association. Fellers, a Central Elementary math teacher, retired after 19 ½years with the McCook system. Sitzman, a McCook elementary first grade teacher, retired after 28 years in McCook schools.

A former student at East Ward Elementary, who used to shoot marbles on the playground, now owns the building. Dan Childers of Sebring, FL, bought the building from McCook Public Schools in March for $60,000 and is in the process of converting the building into seven high-end condos.

The new 2006 inductees into the Bison Alumni Wall of Fame are Robert Douglass ‘55 andToby Warren’ 88. The Wall of Fame recognizes McCook High School graduates of at least 10 years who have contributed significantly to their profession and community. Engraved plaques featuring photographs and a description of their accomplishments will be on permanent display on the wall near the Senior High Auditorium.
Nominees for the Alumni Wall of Fame are always welcome and may be sent to representative Steve Clapp’ 71c/o MHS 600 West 7th, McCook, NE 69001 at any time.

McCook Elementary School, formerly known as North Ward, opened its doors for the new school year on August 28, 2006. The building renovation was completed in the fall of 2005 and all students from the ward schools moved in on October 28, 2005. This year the landscaping has been completed and things are in full swing, with some minor projects still being worked on.
