Anybody who was a student at McCook Junior High during the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, or 80’s knew Bob Backer. He spent 37 years in our school system, primarily as the junior high principal, retiring from that position in 1987. Bob was acknowledged as a strict disciplinarian by his students, but to his staff and faculty he was known for his ready smile, his quiet laugh, and his love of children. His death on Thanksgiving Day 2006 ended the life of a man who was passionate about offering the best education to his students, whether it was in their studies or activities, to prepare them for life.

After 77 years, a long-forgotten class song has finally made its way back to the halls of McCook High School. Mary Austin Horendeck ‘32, wrote the words to their junior class song, and it was sung at pep rallies and football games. “It was a rip-roaring good song and they used it for quite a few years,” said the feisty 93-year old, pointing her finger in the air for emphasis. “But then it went into limbo for some reason.”

We may soon forget about The Beijing Games, but McCook will long remember the Olympian year we had for cultural events! Just like the Tobi ’88 and Brett ’00 Warren, who were keeping the video feeds streaming in from the Olympics (see Alumni News), the Southwest Nebraska Community Theatre Association (SWNCTA) and McCook Community College (MCC) presented wonderful performances for all to enjoy.

Durward Foster ’40 of Boulder, CO had a pleasant surprise in May when he was notified by the newsletter staff that Tom Poore ‘74 had found a MHS 1940 class ring with the initials D F inscribed on the inside of the ring. Durward and his daughter drove to McCook in June to claim the ring and were ecstatic to have it returned. We are hoping for a similar happy ending to this story: A 1979 MHS class ring was found in a wall of a house on West M Street in McCook by Jim Gonzales ’79. The initials on the ring are L C B. The newsletter staff has not been able to come up with a name to fit these initials. If you think this might be yours or someone you know, please contact Robin Frick Calvin ’79, 308-345-7063 or 308-340-2401 or craftwhiz@swnebr.net.
