In The Halls
April 2009
The start of the new school year is always an exciting time in the halls of MHS. This fall found the band students even more excited than usual as they got to try on and wear their new marching uniforms for the first time. The uniforms look very professional and definitely an improvement over the old ones. The band students would like to thank all of the alumni members who donated so generously to the band uniform fund. Without your support and help, the uniforms couldn’t have been purchased so quickly.
On to sports! The McCook Bison volleyball team finished the season with a 19-14 record. This beats the previous school record for 17 victories in a season which was set by the 2005 Bison team. Another school record was broken by senior Danae McCorkle, who achieved 42 RBIs for the softball team, surpassing the 40 that Amber Harpham ‘99 hit in a single season.
MHS sophomore, Connor Larson, placed second in No. 1 singles at the Class B boys’ state tennis tournament for the second year in a row. The Bison team placed fifth overall at the tournament. Connor was named to the first team of the Class B All-State Boys’ Tennis Team for 2008. Senior Austin Larson and junior Nate Crick were honorable mention picks.
Sophomore Shelby Allen placed ninth in the Class B-4 district golf tournament to qualify for the Nebraska Class B girls’ state golf tournament. At the state level she tied for 25th place with a 197 score. The MHS girls’ cross country team placed seventh at the Class B state meet. Freshman Emily Tolliver and sophomore Jessica Sughroue placed 11th and 12th and earned individual medals.
The Aurora Huskies stunned the top-ranked McCook Bison 37-33 in the Nebraska Class B state football semifinals. McCook had reached the state semifinals in each of the last seven seasons and advanced to the finals five times. The Bison have won 69 straight regular season games and have not lost a regular season game since 2001.
Homecoming Royalty for 2008 were second attendants John Huffman and Kali Lyons, first attendants Ryan Hardin and Tara Powell and King Austin Larson and Queen Molly Peck. Senior Stephen Smock represented MHS at the Nebraska Music Educators Association’s all-state choir for the third year in a row.
