A new school year also brought a new superintendent to McCook Public Schools. Grant Norgaard has taken over the head position from Dave Schley, who served as an interim superintendent for two years. Grant is a 1990 graduate of North Platte High School and served as a principal at Dundy County Schools and Columbus Public Schools before becoming a superintendent at Leigh Community Schools in Leigh, Nebraska. Grant, his wife Michelle, and their children Victoria and Hayden, moved to McCook in July where they quickly settled into the community. Read the rest of this entry »

November 2009
This year, 2009 got off to a fast start at McCook High School, with many members of the student body participating in sports and other activities. For the second year in a row, the boys’ basketball team earned a spot at the state tournament, where they lost to top-ranked Ralston by a score of 68-57. Six Bison wrestlers qualified for the state wrestling tournament. Two of our wrestlers placed third – Nate Morgan at 112 pounds and Chris Schleeman at 215 pounds – and the squad placed 14th overall.

The start of the new school year is always an exciting time in the halls of MHS. This fall found the band students even more excited than usual as they got to try on and wear their new marching uniforms for the first time. The uniforms look very professional and definitely an improvement over the old ones. The band students would like to thank all of the alumni members who donated so generously to the band uniform fund. Without your support and help, the uniforms couldn’t have been purchased so quickly.

October 2008
Once again, the New Year heralded in a busy time at McCook Senior High as several teams found themselves headed to state tournaments. For the 26th time, the boys’ basketball team made its appearance at the state tournament, losing to Gretna in overtime by a score of 44-43 in the semi-final game. The Bison sent seven wrestlers to state and three of them brought home medals. Nate Morgan finished with a second-place finish at 103 pounds, Chris Schleeman finished in fifth place at 189 pounds, and Sam Frazier was a third-place finisher at 215 pounds. Sam became the fourth McCook wrestler to win over 100 matches, joining the ranks of Stuart Frazier ’03, Nate Reicks, ‘03 and Dallas Korus ’05.

The 2007-2008 school year started out with several “new” items on hand. The first was the arrival of Mr. Dave Schley, who will take over the reins and serve as our new superintendent of schools. The next was the addition of a 14-member dance squad to entertain the crowd at volleyball, football, and basketball games. The graduating class of 2007 donated new banners, which hang in the MHS gym, and a new logo that has been painted at the south double doors of the gym.

November 2007
Several of McCook’s student athletes were able to compete at the state level in their sport and did quite well. Three wrestlers went to State Wrestling Tournament; Ahren Hays, Chris Schleeman, and Sam Frazier; and Frazier was able to fight his way through the consolation rounds to place fourth at 189 pounds. MHS junior, Matt Hall, placed third in the Nebraska State Diving Championships, with a score of 366 in 11 dives. He finished behind two competitors from Lincoln Southeast.

October 2006
The second half of the 05-06 school year was a busy one at MHS. As usual, sports took a top precedence with several competitors going to state competitions. Sophomore Sam Frazier captured third place at the Class B-4 district wrestling tournament to be a state qualifier. Alyssa Cook took first place at the GNAC swim meet in the diving portion and was a state qualifier. Matt Hall also qualified for state diving at that event and broke the school record for 11 dives with a mark of 330.00. This beat the previous record held by Rick Filon ‘03 by almost 10 points.

Another school year has begun and the students at MHS are once again hard at work. Not only are they registering a lot of academic successes, but they are experiencing success on the athletic side as well.
