Junior Whitney Korgan placed seventh in the 50-yard freestyle finals at the state swimming meet with a school record time of 24.66 seconds. The 200-yard freestyle relay team of Madeline Shaddock, Jayde Aufrecht, Sydnie Stamm, and Korgan placed 15th with a school record time of 1 minute, 46.03 seconds. The same girls swam the 400-yard freestyle relay, placing 18th with a school record time of 3:59.88. The girls’ tennis team finished the regular season with an 11-3 dual record. Hannah Swanhorst made it to the quarterfinals of the state meet as a No. 2 singles player and McCook’s No. 1 doubles team of Brianna Watkins and Jessica Jankovits and the No. 2 doubles team of Kelsey O’Dea and Amy Been also made it to the quarterfinals before being eliminated.

McCook claimed two first-place showings in the Class B girls’ state track meet and finished fifth overall. The 3200-meter relay team of Tara Powell, Kelsea Geschwentner, Emilyne Nichols, and Jessa Sughroue finished first with a time of 9:35.386, which also earned them the All-Class gold medal in the event. The 1600-meter relay team of Whitney Korgan, Powell, Joanna Bryant, and Sughroue finished first with a time of 4:05. The McCook boys’ team placed 20th in Class B competition with 14 points.

The boys’golf team made its first trip to state as a team since 2006. Joe Vetrovsky led his teammates with a 159 over the two days and finished a single stroke out of medal contention.

The McCook High School newspaper staff captured their fifth consecutive Class B Championship in the NSAA State journalism competition. McCook’s FFA floriculture team members, Ben Schilling, Kayla Messinger, Katelyn Fritsche and Allison Dupler will represent the school and Nebraska at the national FFA competition in October.

Matt Berry and Jordan Baumbach were crowned 2009 Color Day Royalty. First attendants were Stephen Smock and Bailey Lauer, while Sarah Wilcox and Aaron Ruppert were second attendants.

Inclement weather forced the 2009 graduation ceremonies to be held in the high school auditorium, but that didn’t dampen the spirits of the 118 students who received their diplomas that day. Ryan Hardin and Sarah Jo Wilcox received the school’s most coveted “Bison Award”. Five students were honored for earning straight A’s throughout high school: Amy Been, Olivia Walter, Matt Carriker, Sarah Wilcox, and Molly Peck.

Summertime found many MHS students still involved with school activities. Choir director Sandy Weigel and 45 members of the varsity choir spent three days in New York City at the end of May. The choir sang Broadway hits and patriotic songs on Liberty Island and at the Lincoln Center, along with touring New York and watching a Broadway play. Cathy Jones, MHS science teacher, nine of her students, and a teacher and students from Cambridge High School participated in NORE – Nebraskans on an Oceanographic Research Education – in late May and early June. They stayed in Costa Rica where they worked at a turtle preserve, took supplies to a settlement of Bribri Indians, and observed a butterfly farm and organic farming operation.

Once again, the New Year heralded in a busy time at McCook Senior High as several teams found themselves headed to state tournaments. For the 26th time, the boys’ basketball team made its appearance at the state tournament, losing to Gretna in overtime by a score of 44-43 in the semi-final game. The Bison sent seven wrestlers to state and three of them brought home medals. Nate Morgan finished with a second-place finish at 103 pounds, Chris Schleeman finished in fifth place at 189 pounds, and Sam Frazier was a third-place finisher at 215 pounds. Sam became the fourth McCook wrestler to win over 100 matches, joining the ranks of Stuart Frazier ’03, Nate Reicks, ‘03 and Dallas Korus ’05.

Whitney Korgan set a school record for the McCook swim team, in the girls’ 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle. The previous records for those events were set by Mindy Smolczyk ’87 during her sophomore year. Senior Matt Hall broke his own record in boys’ diving and placed second in the boys’ one-meter diving competition at the state diving championships. The girls’ tennis team placed all four of their entries into the third round of the Class B state tournament, where they were eliminated in the single elimination format.

Sam Frazier received a first-place medal in the discus at the state tournament with a toss of 154 feet.

The 2007-2008 school year started out with several “new” items on hand. The first was the arrival of Mr. Dave Schley, who will take over the reins and serve as our new superintendent of schools. The next was the addition of a 14-member dance squad to entertain the crowd at volleyball, football, and basketball games. The graduating class of 2007 donated new banners, which hang in the MHS gym, and a new logo that has been painted at the south double doors of the gym.

The most exciting new addition to the high school is actually the return of an old favorite. For the first time in several years, FFA (Future Farmers of America) once again has an advisor and 23 student members at McCook Senior High. Agriculture classes are being offered at the high school through a cooperative effort with McCook Community College, which provides the instructor.

The volleyball squad had a successful season, finishing with a 17-15 record. Senior Justine Hager captured the sixth-place medal at the Nebraska Class B Girl’s State Golf Tournament. She qualified all four years of high school to compete in the tournament. The McCook Bison softball team won the Class B-6 District title for the ninth straight year to advance to the state tournament, where they were eliminated in the second round.

MHS freshman, Connor Larson placed second in No. 2 singles in the Class B Boy’s State Tennis Championship. The Bison football team posted a 12-0 record and advanced to the Class B state title game for the fifth time in six years. McCook was defeated by Crete by the score of 14-7 in overtime.

McCook Homecoming King and Queen were Mitchell Green and Sarah Craw, first attendants were Carson Kain and Cassie Olson, and second attendants were Chance Unger and Erica Clapp.

Juniors Atheana Parde and Stephen Smock represented MHS in the 2007 All-State Chorus, which performed in Lincoln.

Several of McCook’s student athletes were able to compete at the state level in their sport and did quite well. Three wrestlers went to State Wrestling Tournament; Ahren Hays, Chris Schleeman, and Sam Frazier; and Frazier was able to fight his way through the consolation rounds to place fourth at 189 pounds. MHS junior, Matt Hall, placed third in the Nebraska State Diving Championships, with a score of 366 in 11 dives. He finished behind two competitors from Lincoln Southeast.

In track, senior Josh Cherry won the gold in the Class B boys 800 meter, his second consecutive state title in that event. Sam Frazier placed second in the boys’ discus and McCook’s 3200-meter relay team of Jon Bryant, Andy Lambing, Jimmy Barron, and Josh Cherry placed fourth with a time of 8:11.33.

Members of MHS’s newspaper staff were wearing T-shirts reading “3-Peat” as they won the state Class B journalism championship for the third year in a row. Winning a first-place individual medal in all classes at the state contest was Cassie Olson, who took the category of newspaper layout.

Morgan Shaddock and Lucas Kotschwar were crowned Color Day Queen and King. First attendants were Taryn Placzek and Josh Cherry and second attendants were Tristan Darling and John Swanhorst.

The MHS Class of 2007 graduated on May 13. During the ceremonies, Miranda Sis and Brett Burton were awarded the Bison Awards for exemplifying citizenship, loyalty, service, and the ability to promote a positive rapport within the school. Tristan Darling and Miranda Sis were honored as the top students in the class, earning straight A’s throughout four years of high school. 2007 Class President was John Swanhorst and Vice-President was Brett Burton.

Several new additions were added to the school grounds for the benefit of our students. A new wrestling facility was donated by boosters of the wrestling program and

the 60’ x 87’ steel building was placed in the old rock parking lot southwest of the high school gymnasium. Six new state-of-the-art lighted tennis courts were constructed at the high school, north of the parking lot. The courts are open to the public when not in use by the high school tennis team. The courts were paid for by the school district, along with a grant from the United States Tennis Association and a gift from an anonymous donor. Finally, the muddy path between the concessions stands at Weiland Field is now a thing of the past as the 2007 Senior Parents raised money to build an eight-foot wide sidewalk around the east side of the field. Our thanks go to the many individuals and businesses who helped make these improvements and additions to our school district.

The second half of the 05-06 school year was a busy one at MHS. As usual, sports took a top precedence with several competitors going to state competitions. Sophomore Sam Frazier captured third place at the Class B-4 district wrestling tournament to be a state qualifier. Alyssa Cook took first place at the GNAC swim meet in the diving portion and was a state qualifier. Matt Hall also qualified for state diving at that event and broke the school record for 11 dives with a mark of 330.00. This beat the previous record held by Rick Filon ‘03 by almost 10 points.

In girls tennis, McCook’s No. 2 doubles team of Melissa Lyster and Amy Lester finished third at state and senior Jen Chmiel finished fourth in No. 2 singles at the Nebraska Class B state girls tennis tournament. McCook boys track team finished second in the Class B state track meet for the third year in a row. Josh Cherry won the 800 at that meet with a time of 1 minute, 55.378 seconds, breaking the 32-year-old school record set in 1974 by Jim Tiller ‘74. Brendan Liess, Tony Purvis, Jeff Klug and Nate Berry teamed up for the 400 relay win. Liess, Purvis, Cherry, and Jon Bryant took the 1600 relay. The runners missed the school record by a tenth of a second. At the girls GNAC track meet, Kim Miller took top honors in the shot put with a new school record of 42 feet, 4 ½ inches.

In Class B Boys State Golf Tournament at Lincoln’s Highlands Golf Course, Brandon Crick of McCook finished third with a 142 score. Omaha Skutt Catholic won the Class B title with a score of 642. McCook and Omaha Gross Catholic finished 10-strokes back tied for second at 652.

In other state competitions, two MHS seniors, Kyle Conroy and Forrest Kain, qualified to compete in the Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills Competition in Milford. The MHS economics team of seniors Minda Haas, Jared Olson, Daniel McConville and Forrest Kain won the Nebraska All-Class “Economics Challenge” in Lincoln and represented the state at regional level in Minneapolis. The senior high’s journalism department won its fourth Class B state journalism championship.

Ozgun Ozguven (a Rotary exchange student from Turkey) and Jacob Forbes were crowned MHS Color Day Queen and King following the Lexington basketball game. First attendants were Whitney Fagot and Micah Kamla and second attendants were Julia Lyons and Joel Arterburn.

The latest group of MHS alumni graduated on May 14, 2006. At the ceremony, Rebecca Rawlins and Brandon Kotschwar were presented with the 2006 Bison Awards. Trophies for special distinctions were given to Jeff Klug, Allison Smith, and Stephen Grove, who earned straight A’s throughout their high school careers. 2006 Class Officers were Julia Lyons, president; Jessica Fritsch, vice-president; and Meghan Ecker, secretary. We welcome these graduates and offer them a hearty “well done”.
