Insuring the Future of the Newsletter

We appreciate more than you know all of those who have contributed to the future of the Bison Alumni Newsletter! With that being said, we still need support from others to provide a modest salary, office space, photo copier, computer, printer, internet and telephone expenses. We hope to be in an office space of our own, in the renovated Keystone Building in the Summer of 2010! We estimate our expenses to be around $600 a month.

Randy Andrews ‘73 joins the McCook Bison Alumni Newsletter as New Director

During the last year the Bison Alumni Newsletter Staff and Class Representatives have been preparing to transition to a new paid director. Randy Andrews ’73 was hired in early August and he and Cheri Myers Beckenhauer ’64 have been working together since that time. They will continue to work together through the Bison 2010 reunion, at which time Cheri will take on a much smaller volunteer role.

Randy is excited to be a part of the alumni newsletter and to be able to assist Cheriwith the production of the Fall newsletter. He is also glad to be working with the alumni database, correspondence and the upcoming 2010 all-class reunion. Randy is especially excited about and encourages alumni to use our two websites that are being utilized to generate alumni information: bisonalumni.com and mccook2010.com

Randy grew up in McCook along with his brother Steve’65 and sisters Susie ’68 and Judy ’75. His father, Howard, worked for the Bureau of Reclamation and his mother, Merlyn, worked at the Red Willow County Courthouse and McCook College cafeteria.

After returning to McCook in 2003, Randy married his high school sweetheart, Peg Augustyn ’74. He has a daughter, Shannon Pike, and grandson, Morgan, who live in Salt Lake City, UT.

Randy graduated from the University of Nebraska with a degree in Business Administration. He worked in the insurance industry for over 25 years in Charleston, SC and Salt Lake City, UT as a Commercial Property and Casualty underwriter, producer and marketing representative.

You may have seen Randy running on the streets and hills of McCook. He began running in 1983 to lose weight and quit smoking. It has been a constant in his life ever since, as he runs between 50 and 100 miles a week. He started running ultra marathons (100 mile races) in 2001 and has run 20 ultra marathons as well as 50 marathons.

McCook has always been special to Randy. He has fond memories of growing up here and hasn’t regretted moving back home. His responsibilities with the alumni newsletter will allow him to work with many people who share his passion for McCook and McCook High School.

Searching For New Bison Newsletter Director

Heads up! Get your thinking caps on! Beginning this fall and up until January, the Bison Alumni Newsletter will be transitioning to a new director. Our present director, Cheri Myers Beckenhauer 64, will be turning over the reins, after 18 years, to a new person who has yet to be found!

The position is part time, with salary and hours to be discussed. Office hours are flexible with some months being much busier than others. The goal of the director is to help class representatives produce and distribute the newsletter – by print and eventually transitioning into internet website usage. Other goals are to help classes with reunion needs and develop a cohesive alumni base for MHS. A good communicator, manager, and detail-oriented person will be necessary for this position. Computer skills and familiarity with websites and the ever-changing internet are a must.

So why are we telling you all of this? Two reasons: You may be able to help us find this person. It could be someone who lives in or near McCook or possibly someone who might consider moving home in the near future.

And secondly, there are financial needs that go along with this transition into the future. Those expenses will include the director’s salary of course, and the Bison Alumni Newsletter will ideally need to find office space, use of computer, internet access, phone service, printer, paper, scanner and copy machine (hopefully made available by a local business). For 18 years the office needs and expenses have been covered at no expense to the alumni newsletter by a local business. We would hope to find some same kind of similar situation if possible in the future.

Bison 2010 Logo Contest

Objective: To create an original logo for use as a U.S.P.S. Cancellation Stamp and on multiple types of promotional items for the Bison 2010 All School Reunion in McCook July 2-5, 2010.

Entry Deadline: February 1, 2009.

Contest Rules: Each entry must be submitted with your name, address and daytime telephone number. Each individual may submit up to two (2) logos for the contest. Entries must be submitted in an 8 ½” X 11" format and may be submitted electronically or on hard copy.

Contestants must keep in mind that their entry will be reduced to 2" vertically X 4" horizontally for the cancellation stamp (PO suggests no larger than 2" h and 2 1/2" long for a better fit) and that variations of the logo may also be used in a larger size on t-shirts or other promotional items.

The McCook High School Bison Alumni Newsletter and 2010 Reunion Steering Committee and the McCook Post Office reserve the right to eliminate any and all entries if none are found acceptable according to the rules and objectives of the contest.

All entries become property of Bison Alumni and Newsletter and Bison 2010 Reunion Committee and may be utilized for future promotions or promotional items.

Announcement of Winning Entry: At the Bison Alumni Newsletter folding party tentatively set for March 24, 2009. Send all entries to: bisonalumni@carpenterbreland.com or send to: Bison 2010 Steering Committee, Logo Contest, 308 West 2nd St, McCook, NE 69001.

Insuring the Future of the Newsletter

“What is ‘Insuring the Future’? When this newsletter started in 1992, the first issue was a whooping four pages, sent to ten classes and around 1,000 newsletters. Now it is at least 16 pages, 70+ classes and 7,500 newsletters. This is a huge project which has necessitated hiring a part-time assistant director. Camy Bradley ‘80 makes over 1,300 address changes a year, works to get the newsletter typed and published and much more. Over 100 volunteers help get the newsletter to you. However, this office position is critical to the continuation of the newsletter into the future. By the year 2010, we must have a paid director for the newsletter (Unless someone would like to volunteer). Please consider giving to “Insuring the Future” to make this need a reality.

Terra Ellerton Michaelis ‘94 became our part-time assistant director ($100 a month) in July of 2005. She resigned in March of 2007. We thank her so much for taking on the task and doing a great job. Camy Eggers Bradley ’80 was hired in May to fill the position. She continues to make hundreds of address changes in our database of 10,872. She does numerous other office duties to make the newsletter happen. This position is critical to the continuation of the newsletter into the future.

Terra Ellerton Michaelis ‘94 became our part-time assistant director ($100 a month) in July of 2005. She has made an enormous positive impact on the efficiency of the newsletter. She makes at least 800 address changes a year in our database of 10,577 names with the Class of ’07 to be added shortly. She does numerous other office duties to make the newsletter happen. This position is critical to the continuation of the newsletter into the future.

Since July 2005, Terra Ellerton Michaelis ‘94 has served as our paid ($100 a month) part-time assistant director.

She is making an enormous impact for those of us who have been (and still are) volunteering many hours to make this twice-a-year newsletter possible. She is making 600-800 address changes a year, which is a job all its own. She is also collecting information and typing class announcements, thank you’s, deaths weddings, etc. for the newsletter. Insuring The Future

We are now an official, non-profit organization: Bison Alumni and Newsletter. We have affiliated with the McCook Community Foundation which is a part of the Nebraska Community Foundation, a 501 C3 corporation. (See Insert of paper newsletter.) This affiliation gives us legal and accounting benefits, as well as tax-deductible status.

The newsletter machine has grown from an eight-page letter sent to 1000 Alumni in 1992 to a 16-18 page newsletter sent to over 7100. Ten people were involved in producing the first issue. This current issue has taken more volunteers than I have time to count (you count the Thank You list on page 15). Thank you, whether your name is there now or has been there in the past! It takes everyone or it would not happen!

We have looked into the future and want to see that the newsletter will continue for years to come. To accomplish that goal, we felt it necessary to hire someone to learn the system and be able to direct the entire process from beginning to end. NO ONE is quitting their volunteer positions! We are just insuring that if something should happen to some of the core organizers, the newsletter will continue.

We have hired Terra Ellerton Michaelis ‘94 as a consultant who will work as an assistant to the director (Cheri Myers Beckenhauer ‘64) of the Bison Alumni Newsletter. Terra is married to Brian Michaelis ‘94 who is a chiropractor in McCook. She is a busy young mother of two small children and a new baby. Her enthusiasm and excitement about working with the database and alumni have been and will continue to be an inspiration to all of us. She started work in July and is being paid $100 a month to work with the database and all aspects of the newsletter production.

We are seeking alumni or classes who will help cover this expense in years ahead.
