Harry Lebsack ’51 has hung up his scissors after 45 years of cutting hair at his barber shop in McCook. Harry reminisced about the hair styles that have gone out and come back around. On the long styles of the 60’s and 70’s, he said we just watched them walk on by. One other change over the years was the price rising from $1.25 to $10.00. Lebsack said he was the place for the men who needed “just a haircut.” One of his clients commented that they also stopped in to “Harry’s” to visit and to catch up on things, to get the latest news. Harry said, “I’m just a manure spreader. The guys bring it in and I spread it around. We have talked about all kinds of things, sports, fishing, weather, politics, but mostly sports.”
Dick Budig ’56 honored Al Cuellar ‘56 by painting a portrait of his classmate and donating it to the Museum of the High Plains in McCook. Dick feels strongly about honoring those who do the right thing day after day without getting much credit. Dick said that Al has been the “go to” guy for him and their classmates; he has kept the class together by keeping track of everyone. He is the glue that over time holds society, classmates and students together.
Bonita Boyd Lages ’57 recently retired from Civilian Service with the Department of Army,
Judy Chinn Wortley ’58 shared words of encouragement during the regular meeting of Compassionate Friends in McCook. Judy is the author of Forgiving the Murderer of my Child, her 5th book. She also authored “To Know Him is to Love Him” and three instruction books on children’s ministry after retiring from a position as a director of children’s ministry in
Corlyn “Corky” Billesbach Gettman ’60 has written a book titled, Sound of the Moon. This book is the autobiography of a young girl growing up in a small mid western town (McCook) in the 1950s. Dale Dueland ’72 and Leigh Ann Lyle Miller ’78 have been elected to the McCook Community Foundation’s fund advisory committee board of directors. The McCook Community Foundation, formed in 2001, is an affiliated fund of the Nebraska Community Foundation. In 2008, total assets of the McCook Fund approached $1 million.
Mary Dueland ’73 was honored with one of the three Nebraska Excellence in Teaching Awards during the 2009 Nebraska Teacher of the Year and Excellence in Teaching Awards Luncheon at the Nebraska Governor’s Residence.
Jim Harris ’73 wrote and also plays a role in the musical, “Civil War Voices.” After a performance in

Rob Putz ’74 recently retired after 33 years of service with UPS in McCook. He started with UPS in 1975 and started driving in 1979, delivering about 450 packages a day. Putz said the job was great and he enjoyed working for UPS. “I’ll miss the people but not the packages,” he joked. Putz, who is also the pastor of

Petty is a 9-year veteran assigned to the Nebraska State Patrol’s Troop D-North Platte Traffic Division. The theme for her show was the concept of beauty, with one picture named “Conversations With God: Beauty is Important, But Love is Blind”. Her painting is the result of her own struggle with the idea of beauty and what she said God revealed to her about it.
